How does Alfuzosin work?

Alfuzosin blocks alpha1-adrenergic receptors in the smooth muscle of the prostate and the bladder neck. When that muscle relaxes, the urethra opens wider and urine flows with less straining. The frequent trips, weak stream and incomplete emptying that come with an enlarged prostate ease as the passage opens. The extended-release design in Uroxatral spreads the 10 mg dose over roughly 24 hours, so blood levels stay steadier than with an immediate-release tablet and the peak-related dizziness is reduced.
