How does Sildenafil work?
Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor. During sexual stimulation, the body releases nitric oxide in the erectile tissue of the penis, which triggers a chemical called cGMP to relax smooth muscle and let blood flow in. PDE5 is the enzyme that breaks cGMP down, ending the erection. Sildenafil blocks that enzyme, so cGMP stays active longer and the blood flow is maintained.
The medicine does not create an erection on its own. It restores the natural response to sexual stimulation by keeping the existing chemical signal switched on for longer. Sildenafil is also the active ingredient in Revatio and other treatments for pulmonary arterial hypertension, where it works on blood vessels in the lungs rather than the penis.
