Key points

  • Do not take avanafil with organic nitrates in any form. The label states this combination is contraindicated because avanafil can amplify the blood pressure drop caused by nitrates.
  • An erection lasting longer than 4 hours needs immediate medical attention; without prompt treatment it can cause permanent tissue damage.
  • Headache, flushing, nasal congestion and back pain occur in 2% or more of patients in trials.

How does Avanafil work?

Avanafil blocks the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5, which breaks down a signal that relaxes blood vessels in the penis. With that signal sustained, blood flow increases during sexual stimulation. Avanafil does not cure erectile dysfunction or raise sexual desire on its own. The liver clears it mainly through the CYP3A4 enzyme. Avana supplies avanafil alone; the combination product Super Avana pairs it with dapoxetine, a short-acting SSRI.
