Key points

  • Dexlansoprazole is indicated for adults and children 12 years and older with reflux symptoms or erosive oesophagitis.
  • Long-term or high-dose use of proton pump inhibitors may raise the risk of fractures of the wrists, hips or spine, and of fundic gland polyps.
  • Iron supplements and St. John’s wort may interact with dexlansoprazole.

How does Dexlansoprazole work?

Dexlansoprazole blocks the proton pump in the stomach lining, the final step in acid production. With less acid flowing back into the oesophagus, heartburn eases and irritated tissue can begin to heal.

The capsule uses a dual-release design that sets it apart from other proton pump inhibitors. Two groups of granules dissolve in the intestine at different times: one begins working about an hour after you swallow the capsule, and the second four to five hours later. This gives a longer window of acid suppression from a single dose.
