Key points

  • Nausea and vomiting relief: Domperidone is used for the relief of nausea and vomiting, and it is also listed for Dyspepsia.
  • Stomach emptying: It speeds up how quickly food leaves the stomach by tightening the muscles at the top and relaxing those at the bottom.
  • Heart rhythm risk: Domperidone has been linked to an increased risk of serious ventricular arrhythmias, particularly in people over 60 or those taking more than 30 mg daily.

How does Domperidone work?

Domperidone acts on the stomach and on a small area that triggers the urge to vomit, which sits outside the blood-brain barrier. It blocks dopamine signals in that area and tightens the muscles at the top of the stomach while relaxing those at the bottom. The result is faster stomach emptying and a reduced sense of nausea. A 10 mg domperidone tablet reaches peak levels in the blood within about an hour. Domperidone does not change how much acid the stomach produces.
