Key points

  • Doxazosin relaxes muscle around the prostate and bladder neck to ease urinary flow in Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, and widens blood vessels to lower pressure in Hypertension.
  • First-dose dizziness or fainting is the main safety concern: doxazosin can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure when you start taking it or increase the dose.
  • Cardura is the brand-name version of doxazosin; the generic Doxazosin Tablets contains the same active ingredient.

How does Doxazosin work?

Doxazosin belongs to a group of medicines called alpha blockers. It relaxes the smooth muscle around the prostate and the bladder neck, which eases urinary flow when the prostate is enlarged. The same relaxing effect widens blood vessels, so the heart does not have to push as hard to move blood through them.

The effect builds over the first few days. Because the blood-pressure drop can be sharpest after the very first dose or after a dose increase, dizziness or fainting is the main early risk. Doxazosin is listed under Bladder Health for its role in easing urinary symptoms.
