Key points

  • Boxed warning: liothyronine must not be used for weight loss in people with normal thyroid function; it is ineffective for that purpose and may cause life-threatening toxicity, especially alongside amphetamines.
  • It belongs to the thyroid agents class and supplies triiodothyronine (T3), the active thyroid hormone, directly to the body.
  • Liothyronine is not suitable if you have adrenal insufficiency or thyrotoxicosis.

How does Liothyronine work?

Liothyronine is synthetic triiodothyronine, the active form of thyroid hormone. Once absorbed, it enters cell nuclei and binds to thyroid hormone receptors, which attach to DNA and switch on genes that control how quickly your cells use energy. Because it is already T3, liothyronine skips the conversion step the body normally performs on T4, so its metabolic effects can appear sooner. Within the Thyroid Health range, it is the direct T3 option.
