Key points

  • Beyond mania: Lithium Carbonate is also used for recurrent depression and for aggressive or self-mutilating behaviour, and for Bipolar Disorder Maintenance.
  • Narrow therapeutic window: the gap between an effective dose and a toxic one is small, so blood levels need checking regularly throughout treatment.
  • Not suitable if you have severely impaired kidney function, untreated hypothyroidism, or a cardiac rhythm disorder.

How does Lithium Carbonate work?

Lithium Carbonate is a Mental Health medicine that decreases abnormal electrical activity in the brain to stabilise mood during and between manic episodes. It may take one to three weeks or longer before you feel the full benefit, and it controls the condition rather than curing it. Because different preparations can vary in how much lithium your body absorbs, blood levels are checked every five to seven days when you start or switch formulations, then at regular intervals for as long as you stay on treatment.
