Key points

  • Medroxyprogesterone is a progestin that mimics progesterone’s actions on the uterus, and may reduce the risk of uterine cancer in women taking estrogen.
  • It is contraindicated in pregnancy and must never be used to test for pregnancy or prevent miscarriage, as it may harm the fetus.
  • Provera is the brand-name version of medroxyprogesterone acetate, also indicated for preventing overgrowth of the uterine lining.

How does Medroxyprogesterone Acetate work?

Medroxyprogesterone acts on the uterus by stopping the growth of its lining and prompting the organ to produce certain hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle. Because it mimics progesterone, it can stabilise a lining that has become too thick or irregular. It carries negligible male-hormone or estrogen-like activity, so it does not add hormonal signals beyond what progesterone provides. At oral doses it may inhibit ovulation.
