Monobenzone is the active ingredient in Benoquin Cream, a 20% topical depigmenting treatment for extensive vitiligo. It removes pigment from unaffected skin so the lighter patches blend in.

How does Monobenzone work?
The exact mechanism is not fully understood. Topical application of monobenzone increases the excretion of melanin from melanocytes, the cells that produce skin pigment. It may also destroy these cells, which is why the depigmentation is permanent.
