Key points

  • Perindopril must not be taken during pregnancy because it may harm the developing baby. If you become pregnant while on it, contact your doctor immediately.
  • It controls high blood pressure but does not cure it, so you keep taking it even when you feel well.
  • Vomiting, diarrhoea or heavy sweating can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure while on perindopril.

How does Perindopril work?

Perindopril blocks the enzyme that converts angiotensin I into angiotensin II, the chemical that narrows blood vessels and makes the body hold fluid. The liver activates the drug into its working form before it takes effect. The result is wider vessels, less fluid held in the body and lower blood pressure.
