Key points

  • Praziquantel is the WHO-recommended treatment for all forms of schistosomiasis.
  • Do not take praziquantel with rifampin; rifampin must stop four weeks before starting praziquantel and resumes one day after finishing.
  • Praziquantel must not be used if you have ocular cysticercosis (tapeworm cysts in the eyes).

How does Praziquantel work?

As an Antiparasitics medicine, praziquantel causes severe spasms and paralysis in the worms’ muscles. Once paralysed, the worms are either passed in the stool or broken down in the bowels, so you may not notice them leaving.
