Prednisolone is a corticosteroid in the Pain & Anti-inflammatories category that calms the immune system and reduces inflammation. It also suppresses the adrenal glands’ own steroid production, so after three weeks or more of daily use the dose needs to be tapered rather than stopped. A fever, infection or surgery can leave the body unable to mount its usual stress response, meaning the dose may need to be increased for a short period rather than reduced. For less severe conditions, an alternate-day schedule may be possible to limit this suppression.
Prednisolone is used for inflammatory conditions and allergic states. It is also used for autoimmune disorders, adrenal insufficiency and congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
Prednisolone may start to work within 1 to 2 hours. Its effects may last for 18 to 36 hours.
Common side effects include increased appetite, insomnia and indigestion. Moderate side effects can include weight gain, elevated glucose and fluid retention.
