Key points

  • Thiamazole can also be taken before thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine therapy to prepare the gland.
  • Thiamazole can sometimes cause bone marrow depression, a reduction in blood cells that impairs the ability to fight infection and can become life-threatening if not detected early.
  • Thiamazole may harm an unborn baby; reliable contraception is required from the start of treatment and throughout.

How does Thiamazole work?

Thiamazole blocks the thyroid gland’s ability to use iodine to make thyroid hormones, which reduces the amount of hormone released into the bloodstream. Because the gland stores some hormone already, improvement takes four to eight weeks to reach its full extent.
