Key points

  • Tranexamic acid belongs to the antifibrinolytic class: it prevents the breakdown of blood clots rather than stopping bleeding outright.
  • A history of blood clots or a clotting condition is a major precaution; a doctor will probably advise against taking tranexamic acid in those cases.
  • The medicine reduces the volume of blood lost during a period but does not stop menstrual bleeding entirely.

What the Cyklokapron label says

Cyklokapron tablets must be swallowed whole, not split, chewed or crushed. The label limits use to 5 days in a menstrual cycle and no more than 6 tablets in 24 hours, and the medicine should not be taken when you are not menstruating. Clot-dissolving medications such as alteplase or reteplase may require dose changes or close monitoring alongside tranexamic acid. Cyklokapron is listed under Women’s Health for these uses.
