Canagliflozin
Canagliflozin is listed as Invokana, a 100mg tablet for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It belongs to the same class as empagliflozin and dapagliflozin.
Medicine containing Canagliflozin
Key points
- Canagliflozin blocks SGLT2 in the kidney, so glucose that would be reabsorbed leaves in the urine instead.
- Because it works through the kidneys, it is less effective when kidney function is low.
- Genital yeast infections and urinary tract infections are the most common side effects; drinking enough fluid helps avoid dehydration.
Rare but serious
Diabetic ketoacidosis can occur even when blood sugar is not very high: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, tiredness or trouble breathing need urgent care. Sores or infections on the feet or legs should be checked promptly.
