Key points

  • Ledipasvir is an NS5A inhibitor: it blocks the NS5A protein, which hepatitis C needs to assemble new viral particles; without it, the virus cannot spread within the body.
  • Sofosbuvir, the other ingredient in this tablet, is a nucleotide polymerase inhibitor that stops the virus from copying its genetic material.
  • Ledipasvir and sofosbuvir labelling carries a warning about hepatitis B reactivation during or after treatment.

How does ledipasvir work?

Ledipasvir blocks the NS5A protein, which hepatitis C needs to assemble new viral particles. Without it, the virus cannot spread within the body. Sofosbuvir, the other ingredient in this tablet, stops the enzyme that copies the virus’s genetic material. The two attacks target different steps in the viral life cycle, which is why ledipasvir is not sold as a single-ingredient product.

Hepcinat LP, a Natco Pharma product, carries the same two ingredients and strengths as Harvoni, the brand-name version. For more on the condition this treats, see Chronic Hepatitis C, or browse the wider Hepatitis Treatment range.
