Misoprostol
Cytotec is the tablet form of misoprostol, a synthetic version of prostaglandin E1, in 100mcg and 200mcg strengths. It is listed for Nsaid-induced Gastric Ulcer Prevention and Miscarriage, and doctors also use it in medical abortion.

Key points
- In the stomach it cuts acid output and thickens the protective mucus, which guards against ulcers from anti-inflammatory painkillers.
- In the womb it triggers contractions and softens the cervix. That is why it is used in pregnancy care, and why it must never be taken in a pregnancy that is to continue.
- Common side effects are diarrhoea, abdominal pain and nausea; uterine rupture is rare but needs urgent care.
Ending an early pregnancy
The standard regimen is mifepristone, then misoprostol a day or two later, up to about nine weeks after the first day of the last period. The WHO abortion care guideline also accepts misoprostol on its own. Before either, a scan has to date the pregnancy and show it is in the womb, because misoprostol does not treat an ectopic pregnancy. It is not suitable with an IUD, a bleeding disorder, severe asthma, adrenal disease, or steroid or anticoagulant treatment, and you should stay within reach of an emergency unit for two weeks. Seek help for more than two soaked pads an hour or a temperature above 38°C. A follow-up test matters: in up to 4 in 100 cases the pregnancy is not fully passed.
