How does Mycophenolate Mofetil work?

Mycophenolate mofetil is a prodrug that the body converts into mycophenolic acid, the active form. Mycophenolic acid blocks an enzyme that cells need to build DNA, and because lymphocytes cannot find that building block any other way, they stop multiplying. This calms the immune response, which is why mycophenolate sits in the Autoimmune Support category alongside its transplant use. The drug does not seem to affect the liver enzymes that process many other medicines, and in healthy adults it takes up to one week to clear the body.
