Mechanism of action
Aubagio contains teriflunomide, an immunomodulatory medicine that selectively and reversibly inhibits the mitochondrial enzyme dihydroorotate dehydrogenase. This enzyme is needed by rapidly dividing cells, including activated lymphocytes that drive the immune attack on myelin in multiple sclerosis. By reducing the proliferation of these activated immune cells, Aubagio helps decrease inflammation and damage to the protective covering of nerves, thereby reducing the number of relapses and slowing the progression of disability.

Age restrictions
Approved for adults aged 18 years and over and paediatric patients aged 10 years and older (EU). Safety and efficacy in children under 10 years not established.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Pregnancy: Aubagio is contraindicated in pregnancy. Teriflunomide caused teratogenicity and embryolethality in animal studies at exposures lower than human therapeutic levels. Pregnancy must be excluded before starting treatment. Females of reproductive potential must use effective contraception during treatment and after discontinuation until plasma teriflunomide levels are below a specified threshold. If pregnancy occurs, an accelerated elimination procedure with colestyramine or activated charcoal should be initiated to rapidly lower plasma levels. Breastfeeding: Contraindicated during treatment with teriflunomide.
